Ramon De Jesus Esquevel

Ramon and his new caponera
Ramon was born and raised in León, where he finished his education up to elementary school. After that, he needed to start working to support his family. He first started working as a carpenter, but then decided to drive a caponera (a bike taxi) because the work was more flexible. He very much enjoys his job and the freedom it gives him to support his family on his own terms.

Ramon moved to El Sauce 13 years ago upon meeting his wife while at one of his baseball games. He says getting married and having his three children were the happiest moments of his life, and he is glad to help support his children’s education. However, poverty has always been a problem for Ramon and his family, and they spent their first 8 years in El Sauce renting different houses. Now, he is very proud that he and his family have owned their home for 4 years.

For the majority of his time operating caponera, Ramon needed rent one every morning because he didn’t have his own. This was expensive at C$50 a day, so he decided to save up to purchase his own caponera. With the money he saved, as well as his U$200 loan from Enlace, he able to buy his own, and has now had it for two months. Since he no longer needs to rent one every morning, Ramon now has extra profits every day that help support his family. He is also grateful that Enlace taught him how to use the money he earns more responsibly and not to waste it.
